Air India flight diverted reached Abu Dhabi instead of Tel Aviv, Decision after Missile Attack

Air India flight was diverted on 4 May 2025 after a missile attack on Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport. Air India’s AI139 flight, which was going from Delhi to Tel Aviv, was in Jordanian airspace shortly before the attack when it was diverted to Abu Dhabi.

Air India spokesperson said that the flight landed safely in Abu Dhabi and will return to Delhi soon. After this incident, Air India decided to suspend its Tel Aviv flights till 6 May 2025, so that the safety of passengers and crew could be ensured. Customers whose bookings were between 3 to 6 May are being given the option of a one-time waiver or a full refund.

Impact of Missile Attack

According to Israeli authorities, the missile was launched from Yemen and its impact fell near Terminal 3 parking lot. Israeli police discovered a large crater that was formed after the attack. According to reports 4 people were lightly injured but there was not much damage.

Houthi rebels claimed that they launched a hypersonic ballistic missile which was directly targeting Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said “whoever causes us harm, we will respond sevenfold.”

What will happen next?

Israeli authorities had temporarily halted air traffic, but airport operations resumed after the searches. The attack could further escalate regional tensions.

Air India has confirmed that assistance and alternative arrangements are being provided to passengers. The airline says customer safety is their top priority.
