“Canada Elections 2025: Markey’s victory, Trump’s pressure and a new era of minority government”

Canada Election Results 2025: Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the election, Trump congratulated him, but missed the full majority – what will happen next?

Ottawa: In the 2025 Canada federal election, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has prepared to form the government by winning the most seats. But this time they did not get the full majority – meaning they will have to take the help of smaller parties to keep the government in place.

US President Donald Trump congratulated Carney on his victory, but Carney made a direct attack on Trump in his victory speech. The atmosphere of this election was already hot – Trump’s new tariffs on Canada and threats of annexation had shocked Canadian voters.

Liberal Party: A challenging mandate with victory

There are a total of 343 seats in Canada’s House of Commons. The magic number for a majority is 172, but Carney’s Liberal Party managed to get only 169 seats. This means they will have to seek support from smaller parties such as the New Democratic Party (NDP) or the Bloc Québécois.

Mark Carney’s passionate speech: “America can’t be broken by us”

During the election, the Liberal Party secured 43.1% vote share, while the Conservative Party won 145 seats with 41.7% vote share. Bloc Québécois got 23 seats, Jagmeet Singh’s NDP got 7 seats and Green Party got only 1 seat.

Addressing supporters in Ottawa after his victory, PM Carney said:

“This is not just a victory, this is a message of Canada’s unity. President Trump is trying to break us so that we can completely control America. But this will never happen… never.”

He further said, “The balanced and mutually respectful relationship that existed between Canada and the US after World War II seems to be coming to an end. But we have learned, and we will never let anyone scare us again.”

Carney called Trump’s tariffs and aggressive foreign policy “American betrayal”.

Trump congratulated, but diplomatic silence also broke

US President Donald Trump congratulated PM Carney on his victory and wished him over the phone. But Carney’s sharp comments showed that the relations between the two countries are no longer the same as before. Political experts say Carney-Trump relations could become even more tense going forward, especially on trade and security issues.

Poilievre’s Conservative Party struggles

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged defeat and said his party will now hold the minority government accountable. Poilievre said:

“We know change is needed, but change doesn’t come easily. We need a little more time.”

Poilievre targeted former PM Justin Trudeau during the campaign, but that strategy didn’t work. There was public dissatisfaction from inflation, food prices and housing crisis, but Carney showed a strong and united vision, which people liked.

Justin Trudeau’s political goodbye

Remember that former PM Justin Trudeau resigned in January 2025, and then Carney was made his successor. Carney brought new life to the party with his leadership in a short time, and today he has won his first democratic mandate as PM.

What next? Hung Parliament and new coalition politics

The Liberal Party will now work as a minority government. This means that to pass any important bill, he will need the support of smaller parties. The most likely ally could be the NDP, whose leader Jagmeet Singh was earlier in a support agreement with the Trudeau government.

Analysts believe that Carney will have to do careful political balancing in every policy decision. On one hand, tense relations with the US, on the other hand, domestic economic challenges – all these can make his first term tough

Carney’s victory is also a warning

Mark Carney’s victory was important, but not getting a clear majority shows that the public is not fully trusting any party. Carney now has the opportunity to rebuild trust through his leadership, and show Canada a stable and self-reliant path – especially when his powerful neighbour is challenging him.

Will Carney turn this challenge into an opportunity? Will the minority government be able to function stably? The next few months will be very crucial.
