NASA announced another amazing discovery – Huge lava lake found on Jupiter’s moon!
NASA’s space exploration mission is uncovering new secrets every day. This time NASA has announced a discovery which is not just related to a moon of Jupiter, but is also the beginning of a new chapter for the study of the entire Solar System. This discovery is not about water, but that is no less. NASA has taken pictures of a huge lava lake on Jupiter’s most active moon Io – this lake named Loki Patera is believed to be the world’s largest lava lake.

Jupiter mission and NASA’s view
NASA is still engaged in studying Mars, but this does not mean that it is not interested in other parts of the solar system. The many moons orbiting Jupiter, especially Io, Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto, have always been a subject of curiosity for scientists. Water has been found in the form of ice on some of these moons, but the activity found on Io is of a different level.
NASA’s Juno Mission has been working since 2011 to understand Jupiter. This mission explores Jupiter’s atmosphere, its magnetic field, and its moons. Juno’s special camera and infrared system – JIRAM (Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper) – has been used to scan Io’s surface. And with this technology, scientists saw something that had never been seen before.
Loki Patera – A burning secret
According to NASA, the lava lake named Loki Patera on Io is about 200 km i.e. 125 miles wide. Its surface appears smooth and shiny, which indicates that the lava must have cooled down very fast and converted into obsidian – a volcanic glass. Juno took images of the site during two of its flybys, which show in an aerial view how the surface of the lava lake is constantly updating.
Scott Bolton, the lead investigator on the Juno team, announced the discovery during the European Geophysical Union General Assembly. He said the volcanic depressions on Io have a slightly cooler center and warmer edges – meaning new lava is continuously flowing. That means the activity inside Io shows no sign of stopping.
Molten lava on 3% surface
Juno scientist Alessandro Mura from Rome’s National Institute of Astrophysics said that about 3% of Io’s surface could be covered by molten lava lakes. He said, “Some areas look exactly like the lava cooled so fast that crystals could not form – only volcanic glass.”
This discovery does not mean the discovery of another volcanic lake, but that Io is a dynamic moon where geological processes are still going on. Volcanic eruptions, frictional heating, and planetary forces work together to keep this moon in a constant transformation.

Jupiter and its moons – a great ocean of study
Jupiter has 95 moons, of which Io is the most active. The gravitational pull Jupiter has pulls Io, Europa, and Ganymede. Their combined effect creates friction within Io, which causes its internal heating. This is why Io has the most volcanic activity – the most in the Solar System!
In 1995, the Galileo probe first reported that Jupiter’s internal temperature was higher than expected, but it did not contain as much water as people had thought. Since then, NASA has become even more focused on Jupiter.
Even today Jupiter’s atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen and helium, but some traces of methane and ammonia have also been found. Now the Juno mission is trying to find the water inside Jupiter – specifically looking for molecules of hydrogen and oxygen.
Will this discovery have any impact in the future?
It is difficult for life to exist on Io, but its volcanic activity and geological structure tell us how much more complex other bodies in the solar system can be. At the place which we have ignored till now, such dynamic processes are going on there which can become the basis of new research.
This discovery is not just another space update – it is a reminder that many secrets are still hidden in our surrounding planets and their moons. With the data obtained from this NASA mission, scientists will create even more accurate space models in the future, and perhaps someday we will be able to understand how the structure of the universe really works.
Conclusion:
The study of Jupiter and its moons is still a top priority for NASA. This lava lake found on Io has opened a new research window. This is another exciting moment for space lovers – because every discovery takes us one step further towards understanding the universe.
