St. Andrews University to close, final day will be May 5

Laurinburg, NC — 25 April 2025 — St. Andrews University, a renowned educational institution in North Carolina, has officially announced its closure. The decision was made following financial challenges and a strategic review by the Board of Trustees. The university’s last operational day will be May 5, 2025**.

A center of education for a long time

St. Andrews University is known for its innovative education and unique programs. The university expanded with Sandhills Community College in 1991 to accommodate working professionals, stay-at-home parents, and non-traditional students.

This university was famous for its Scottish heritage, barrier-free campus for disabled students, and top-class academic programs. It also offered equine business and therapeutic riding programs which gave the students a unique learning experience.

Financial Struggles and Closure Agreement

The university was a branch campus of Webber International University, but the financial and enrollment challenges became so severe that it was not possible to tackle them internally. Dr. Nelson Marquez, President & CEO of Webber International University, said:

“We explored every possible solution, but found it difficult to mitigate financial struggles and low enrollment. This decision is painful, but also necessary.”
